The Art of Handcrafting Offshore Fishing Lures
From shaping the mold to polishing the final product, I personally ensure that each lure meets the highest standards of quality and performance.
Turning Raw Materials into Offshore Fishing Tools
The process begins on the lathe, where I shape and polish a simple cylindrical piece into the master mold for one of my eight unique lure models. These molds form the backbone of my work, allowing me to create consistent, high-performing lures.
At the core of each lure is a brass tube, providing strength and durability. To ensure balance and stability in the water, I pour lead around the tube, creating a keel-weighted design. This weight keeps the lure running true—tracking back and below without spinning, even in challenging offshore conditions.
The insert is where the personality of each lure comes to life. Using epoxy resin, I embed holographic eyes and custom graphics that I cut with a Cricut machine. These inserts are placed into a final mold, where clear urethane resin—often tinted with colors to match the design—forms the body of the lure.
Finishing with Precision
Once the casting is complete, the finishing work begins. I trim the brass and sand each lure, starting with dry sanding and moving to wet sanding, all on the lathe. The faces of slant-head designs are refined on a belt sander for precision, and the final polish is done in two stages on a bench buffing wheel. This process gives every lure a glossy, mirror-like finish that not only looks stunning but also enhances its durability.
To complete the lure, I attach a rubber hook loop at the back and skirt it with two lures. This combination ensures it’s ready for action as soon as it hits the water.
